As the new semester kicks off I wanted to take a closer look into one of the many student organizations here on campus. SABERS stands for Student Activities Board. Its mission is to strategically plan and execute events that are community-driven, free and accessible to students. I have attended a few SABERS events myself and they have ranged from bowling and skating at the Family Life Center to a free drive-in movie at Town and Country Drive In. I reached out to SABERS president, Emma Jones, to learn more about what SABERS has planned for this spring semester.
Emma Jones is a sophomore strategic communications major from Wellington. I asked Jones about the plans for this semester.
“We had our first SABERS retreat the first weekend back to school. This gave us an opportunity to brainstorm ideas for new and traditional events this semester.,” Jones said. “I won’t give too much detail, in an effort to keep most of it a surprise, but we are planning on having more events with live music this semester, collaborating with our international students for a talent show, and hosting the most extravagant Gilbert’s birthday party HSU has ever seen.”
I asked Jones if SABERS has ever reached out to other groups on campus to plan events and reach out to even more of the student population.
“In the past, SABERS has partnered with different groups on campus like Sangre, ISF, Proven, and Residence Life. This semester, we are hoping to be more consistent and creative in our collaborations with other student organizations on campus.”
Finally, I wanted to know if Jones has a favorite memory since joining SABERS her freshman year.
“Since SABERS hosts events all time, I feel like I am always making new memories, so I cannot pick just one. However, I can say that I will always be grateful for this organization because of the unexpected friendships I have developed,” Jones said.
Jones has assured me that SABERS has a lot of fun and exciting events planned for this semester. To stay updated on when and where the events are be sure to follow their Instagram, @hsu_sabers, and be on the lookout for posters in Moody and residence halls. SABERS just wrapped up their interviews for new applicants and will not be accepting new team members until the fall of 2022.
Be on the lookout for SABERS events, and remember, they are always 100% free!
