Things to Do in Abilene

By Leah Dumas, Staff Reporter

It can be hard to move to a place where there is seemingly not much to do. Abilene may not have exciting places to visit and events to attend on every street corner, but if you look hard enough, you will find plenty of fun things to check out around town.

One of the biggest attractions in town is the Abilene Zoo. The zoo is a great place to spend an afternoon with friends. It is home to over 1,000 animals and 250 species, including giraffes, monkeys, reptiles and amphibians. There are several exhibits to enjoy, including the Giraffe Safari and the Caribbean Cove.

Fans of the outdoors may also enjoy visiting the Abilene State Park. Here, you can go fishing, ride bikes or pitch a tent and spend the night camping under the stars.

Abilene is known as the Storybook Capital of America. When you’re not sure what to do with your Saturday afternoon, take a walk around downtown and find the statues of characters from famous childhood stories, including The Three Little Pigs, Stuart Little and Dr. Seuss.

Downtown is also home to the Grace Museum. Art walks are held on the second Thursday of every month and are a great chance to check out the museum for free.

Meanwhile, fans of classic movies will enjoy the Paramount Theater, a fully restored theater that dates back to the 1930s. Along with showing classic films throughout the year, the Paramount is also home to concerts and live theatre performances.

Coffee lovers will enjoy checking out the various coffee shops around town. One of the most popular coffee shops is Monks, which is located downtown, just down the street from the Paramount. New coffee shops have also been popping up recently, including The Hallows, which is also downtown, or Maslow’s, which is across the street from Abilene Christian University on Campus Ct. These are great places to study or get to know new friends.

Another fun place to check out is PrimeTime, a family entertainment center that is home to bowling, mini golf, laser tag and arcade games. Additionally, Maxx Air Trampoline Park is a great place to have fun while getting exercise at the same time.

Fans of dancing should check out the Grand Ole Oplin, which is a family dance hall located thirty minutes outside of town. Carpool to Oplin with friends and spend your evening dancing the night away.

These are just a few of the fun things to check out around Abilene. Don’t let naysayers convince you that there is nothing to do around town. If you look, you will find something!
