With the holidays fast approaching, there are dozens of ways to celebrate here in the Big Country. From Christmas lights to getting a picture with Santa, Abilene is full of fun ways to get in the holiday spirit.
Beginning Thursday, Nov. 28, Winter Lightfest will be open until Dec. 29. Located in Centennial Park, there will be iconic displays of light features as well as paths lit with thousands of twinkling lights and animated displays.
The HSU Jazz Ensemble will perform their fall concert at 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, in Behrens Auditorium.
The HSU Theatre Department’s opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors, will show from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 6-7. The opera is about the character Amahl who is healed during the birth of Christ and goes with the three kings to worship the newborn to give him his crutch as an offering.
The Abilene State Supported Living Center is hosting its 30th annual Christmas Lane from Dec. 6 through Dec. 23. It includes over 110 Christmas exhibits, concession stands and opportunities for pictures with Santa.
The Abilene Philharmonic’s annual Christmas Concert will debut Dec. 7, with a matinee performance at 3 p.m. as well as an evening showing at 7:30 p.m. Guest artist Bruce Ewing will perform vocals and will be backed by a large choir formed of several Abilene church congregation choirs.
The Mall of Abilene will have two nights dedicated for pets to have their pictures taken with Santa. Pet Night with Santa begins Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and again the following Tuesday, Dec. 18, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Prices for photos vary depending on the package selected.
On Monday, Dec. 16, the Abilene Public Library will host a gingerbread house worksho from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Everyone in Abilene is invited to the library where all supplies are provided to create a delicious gingerbread house from scratch.
On Wednesday, Dec. 18, Abilene Premiere LUX Cine 10, located in the Mall of Abilene, will provide a complimentary showing of the popular Christmas movie “Elf “starring Will Ferrell. The movie begins at 7 p.m. and although admission is free, tickets will be on a first come, first served basis.
