I love movies…
However, sometimes a good movie is hard to find, especially if I am looking for a faith- based film that will edify my personal walk with Jesus Christ and offer spiritual encouragement. When my Mom recommended The Forge to me, telling me that it was built on these principles, I was intrigued.
Written by Alex Kendrick and Stephen Kendrick, directed by Stephen Kendrick, The Forge follows the life of 19-year-old Isaiah Wright, played by Aspen Kennedy. Isaiah opted out of going to college and is living with his mother Cynthia Wright, played by Priscilla C. Shirer. He spends most of his time either playing basketball or video games. However, when his mother threatens to kick him out of the house unless he gets a job, Isaiah is faced with the reality of the world around him. His job search is hectic, leading to confrontations with strangers and people he cares about.
Eventually, Isaiah meets Joshua Moore, played by Cameron Arnett, who offers him a job at his company and begins to lead Isaiah down the path of discipleship, teaching him the value of hospitality and leading him closer to Christ. As the story progresses, Isaiah faces many different challenges. Some of these obstacles lead him to grow, others bring back past hurts and challenge him to either forgive or to continue holding on to bitterness and anger. Isaiah must decide to either rely on God and trust His plan for his life, or to go back to living the same way he did before encountering Christ.
The Forge had me hooked within the first five minutes. As I watched the movie, I could not help but notice similarities between not only myself and Isaiah, but also between other characters and people in my life that have helped me grow in my faith. This movie truly feels like a love letter to believers, encouraging them in their faith, causing them to look back at their own testimonies and remember what God has done for them.
This story, while fictional, contains a vast number of spiritual truths and truly works to build up the faith of those watching. Apart from the spiritual aspects of the film, it is well written and well acted, with all of those involved in this project fulfilling their roles perfectly. There are comedic moments, emotional payoffs and a genuine love for God behind every part of this movie.
For those looking for a family-friendly, faith-based film, I recommend The Forge. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
