Straight Outta Scotland by: Hope Menken

Straight Outta Scotland (SOS) launches the 2024-2025 Hardin-Simmons University theater season.

Showing Sept. 19-21,  this production consists of five individual hour long shows, and is almost completely student directed. Located in the Down Center Stage Lab Theater, Van Ellis the plays will perform consecutively beginning with Backseat at 6 p.m. Each show will perform once a day to allow the audience flexibility to spread the performances out during all three performances if desired.

Last summer, many HSU theater students traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland for the annual FRINGE festival, the world's largest performance arts festival. HSU not only performed The Ballad of Maria Marten at this event, but also watched several new plays. They brought back five of these to share with fellow students and theater enthusiasts.

“We’re bringing in shows that have never been performed in the States,” Kennan Dowling, junior strategic communication major from Weatherford and co-director of Backseat, said. “It’s really exciting to have the chance to put on never-before-seen shows and to give people a taste of the FRINGE that we got to experience. I’m very excited to be directing for my first time and encourage everyone to come see these amazing shows.”

Tickets are free for students, $5 for military, seniors, faculty and staff and $10 for the general public. They will only be sold at the door, so guests are encouraged to arrive early, as seats will be first come, first served.

Straight Outta Scotland is very diverse and has something for everyone,” Abigail Songer, sophomore theater major from Abilene and co-director of Beach Babe, said. “There’s funny stuff, but serious topics as well. There are things that will make you think and some you don’t have to think twice about. The shows contain serious content so it may not be suitable for young children, but I definitely recommend the play to everyone. It promises to be a roaring good time.”
