Résumés & Lattés: The Future Career Builder

Updated: Nov 13, 2020

Exploring different career paths, building résumés and searching for post-grad job opportunities can often be an overwhelming, anxious journey. The Office of Career Services at Hardin-Simmons University exists to provide students guidance and a variety of tools to aid them in discovering future careers.

Myles Lofland, Director of Career Services at HSU, is a certified professional résumé writer and career coach who helps students and alumni achieve goals through resume writing, coaching and job search strategy. “In student affairs, overall, there’s a national need to reach more students. All higher education has a student affairs department to help meet student needs alongside and in conjunction with academics,” Lofland said.

Résumés & Lattés is an event held by The Office of Career Services, which provides students a chance to get their résumés reviewed and revised to become more professional. Students will also be able to learn more about how to make themselves standout in a résumé. “Understanding the processes, understanding what content needs to be created, and how it needs to be displayed and advertised through job search letters, most importantly the resume, is essential to the career development process today,” Lofland said.

Lofland also emphasizes the relational value that comes with attending an event such as Résumés & Lattés. Through developing a relationship, Career Services can articulate student’s unique features and aspirations onto a piece of paper. “We are here to get to know students, understand where they are coming from, and where they are trying to get to,” Lofland said.

Jonathan Lumpkin, a sophomore at HSU, expressed his satisfaction with the assistance Career Services gave him, especially through Résumés & Lattés. “This is a rare opportunity that many universities don’t offer, and I think is something every student needs to take advantage of,” Lumpkin said.

The next Résumés & Lattés will be Nov. 18 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. outside of Gilberts, due to COVID-19 regulations. Priority will go to students who preregister and reserve their spot on Handshake, a quick and simple process. The Office of Career Services hopes to see students there, ready to take on the future.
