My Freshman Year Journey: From Nigeria to Abilene, Texas By: Tobi Aribo

Updated: Jun 25, 2023

As a student hailing from Nigeria, my freshman year at Hardin-Simmons University has been nothing short of an adventure. This personal journey has been filled with challenges, growth and unforgettable experiences that have shaped my life in the United States.

When I received my acceptance letter from Hardin-Simmons, I was ecstatic. I knew I was about to embark on a life-changing experience. Upon arriving in Abilene, I faced the initial challenges of adapting to a new environment and overcoming culture shock. However, with time, I began to embrace the diverse community and immerse myself in the local culture.

One of the most significant aspects of my freshman year was forming friendships and building a support system. Meeting new people from various backgrounds helped me to broaden my horizons and learn from their experiences. These friendships have been invaluable in coping with the challenges of living away from home.

Hardin-Simmons provided me with numerous opportunities for personal growth, both academically and through extracurricular activities. I took advantage of these opportunities by attending university events and participating in clubs, which allowed me to create a well-rounded and fulfilling campus life.

While being an international student, I also managed to secure two jobs. Although it was challenging to balance work and studies, this experience taught me valuable time management skills and provided me with financial support. I learned the importance of prioritizing my commitments and being disciplined in managing my time.

Reflecting on my freshman year, I am grateful for the opportunities and support I received at Hardin-Simmons. The experiences I have had so far have shaped me into a more resilient and adaptable individual. As I continue my academic journey, I look forward to making the most of my university experience and embracing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
