As we are getting the spring semester started, make sure to head out to the Mabee Athletic Complex to watch your Cowgirl volleyball team in action.
This season when you make it to a game you’ll get double the action as all games this season will be played in a doubleheader format.
The Cowgirls finished last season with a 12-13 record. The team played really well at home all year finishing 7-3. They look to continue this home dominance into this season as they play 10 matches at home. The Cowgirls have six freshmen who will be representing the purple and gold for the first time this season.
The Cowgirls have had all fall semester to practice and work with the new players. Chloe Rivera, a sophomore accounting major from Odessa, Texas, reflected on all the hard work that the team put in last semester.
“We [had] time to slow down and work out all our kinks before competition time,” Rivera said.
Rivera also mentioned how COVID and the change of season format has brought new challenges. However, the team is still excited to take on the new season.
“We are now expected to lengthen our endurance for not just one, but two matches in one night every time we play a team in order to limit exposure,” Rivera said. “We haven’t played an actual match since October 2019. So it’s been over a year. We are definitely ready for competition-- whatever that may look like we are ready to go.”
Make sure to come out this season and to cheer on your Cowgirls. Their first home matches this season will be Friday, Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. when they take on the Sul Ross State Lobos.
