Hardin-Simmons University’s Julius Olsen Honors Program will be under new leadership beginning June 1. Earlier this year, current program director, Dr. Tom Copeland announced his retirement scheduled for May 2025. Dr. Copeland began directing the Honors program in 2005.

The program will be taken over by Dr. Robert Tucker. Dr. Tucker currently serves as

dean of Kelley College of Business and Professional Studies and CEO of Abilene Acquisitions & Valuations.

Dr. Tucker offers a wide array of diversity to the Honors program. He is an accomplished musician and a published author with two of his books on Amazon.  Additionally, he is starting a nonprofit organization, Autism Understanding, Research, & Advocacy (AURA Love). Dr. Tucker also serves autistic and dyslexic children through his service at HSU’s Houston-Lantrip Center for Literacy and Learning.

He will be taking on this position with multiple goals in mind.  He said that he wants to, “continue the good work of Dr. Copeland.”  He also said he wants to offer students a wide variety of opportunities ranging from guest speakers to the utilization of technology as a form of philosophical expression.

“We will provide an open and honest forum where we seek not to indoctrinate, but to explore, to discover and to broaden our sense of academic adventure in a community of eager learners from all areas.  As director, I do NOT have all the answers, but I do have a lot of questions, and I hope to provide an authentic, transparent environment for learning.”

The Honors Program is a fundamental part of HSU life.  Dr. Tucker firmly believes in its value to the campus.

“The Honors program is highly respected and valuable on transcripts and resumes.  In addition, it is a way for all disciplines, talents, preferences and academic approaches to come together to pursue new pathways of thought and expression.”
