The bands and choirs are in full swing at Hardin-Simmons University as we enter the holiday season.
Between the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, fall concerts and Christmas music there will be a plethora of opportunities to connect with fellow students, faculty, staff and music lovers all come together and fellowship through music. During this time many of HSU’s music groups perform.
HSU’s Jazz Ensemble is one such organization. Directed by Dr. Jeffery Cottrell, Jazz Ensemble is dedicated to the study and performance of Jazz in a variety of forms from swing music to progressive rock. The Organization has performed at numerous events including the All School Sing this fall.
It is now time for their annual Fall Concert which will be held Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Van Ellis Theatre. This is an opportunity for the ensemble to perform what they have been working on before dispersing for Thanksgiving Break and welcome in the next season with the HSU community.
The concert will consist of a variety of selections of swing music from the Big Band Era as well as several Jazzy Christmas pieces. “I am excited to show off the hard work and talent of the great students that play in the band. We have a great jazz ensemble here at HSU,” Dr. Cottrell, professor of low brass, theory and composition and director of Jazz Ensemble said.
This concert is a free event and is open to any and all who would like to attend. “Not only does the Jazz Band Ensemble get to play music which is unique to the club, but it also has a unique community. A lot of the jazz band members are involved with other groups like the Cowboy Band. It brings together a variety of members and experiences which results in the club we know today,” Joe Howard, junior worship leadership major from Millsap, said.
“I’m excited to get to play different renditions of Christmas music that you don’t necessarily hear very often.” The HSU Jazz Band Ensemble is open to any HSU student regardless of major or minor.
