The Hardin-Simmons University Concert Choir alongside a few other local choirs will be performing the oratorio Hyden’s Creation on April 5 at First Central Presbyterian Church.
Haydn’s Creation is an oratorio written in 1797-1798 by Joseph Hyden about the story of creation in Genesis. Hyden was inspired by performances of oratorios written by Handel when he visited England in 1791-1795. He was also inspired by John Milton’s Paradise Lost, a story about the innocence of Adam and Eve and their subsequent fall from grace in Genesis, and published in 1667. The oratorio was written in both English and German, but the collective choir will be performing the English version on April 5.
Hyden’s Creation has three movements, the first being a story of creation. This first part deals with the first four days of creation; light, plants and the sun and moon are created on these days as well as the story of the fallen angels being cast down. The second part is about the creation of animals and more importantly, man and woman. The final part describes their bliss in this “new created world”. The performance on April 5 will only pertain to the first two parts, but will still be meaningful and moving nonetheless.
The concert choir, a separate, smaller, audition choir that is a part of the chorale but also has their own additional performances,. is very excited to be able to perform Creation. The choir has been practicing every Tuesday and Thursday for the performance, but will only get to practice alongside the other choirs on the 31 of March. This opportunity will help them to build connections with the community as well as sing beautiful God-honoring music for members of the community to enjoy.
Though many people are already planning to go to the event, having a good turnout from Hardin-Simmons there to support the musical groups as well as the other local musical organizations would help to show tangible support and appreciation for these dedicated and talented students.
