The Cowgirl and Cowboy basketball teams are both knee deep into their seasons, while making HSU proud along the way. The women’s team has started off with an overall record of 13 wins and four losses. Their record in conference is seven and one, with their only loss being to the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor by seven points.
The Cowgirls are led by their one and only senior Taylor Gaffney. “[Being the only senior has] helped me transform into the best leader I can be knowing everyone is looking up to me,” Gaffney said.
The cowgirls this year are young, yet powerful. Their team is made up of 12 underclassmen and five juniors and seniors. Gaffney spoke very highly of the underclassmen on the team.
“Our freshmen have played a huge role this season and they’ve all done a great job adjusting and playing the role they were given,” Gaffney said.
The Cowgirls have not been the only ones making a statement this season though, our Cowboys hit the ground running and have a current overall record of six wins and 10 losses.
Chris Barrett, one of the three seniors on the team, has high hopes for the team this season. “We are still in the race for the conference tournament, and we plan to end this season a lot better than we started off,” Barrett said.
This team’s Mantra this season is “JustUs” which stands for sticking together as a team and not buying into the outside noise.
As this season progresses both the Cowgirls and Cowboys would love HSU’s support in their final game. “When our fellow peers come out to our games we feel extremely motivated. The more we see in the crowd, the more energy it brings us,” Barrett said.
The next home game will be Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. for women’s team and 7:30 p.m. for the men’s team. Senior night will be on Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. for the women and men, respectively.
