It is that time of year again when we celebrate the one and only Gilbert’s birthday - the profoundly popular goose who had no idea it was his birthday when asked for this article. Nevertheless, the Hardin-Simmons University community goes all out.
This annual celebration was sadly missed last year due to the semester proceeding online because of the pandemic, so this year’s celebration seems extra special.
“I was sad I had to miss Gilbert’s birthday last year because of COVID,” said Keziah Chacko, a sophomore social work and psychology major from Keller. “I would hear all about it from the upperclassmen and how the campus would go above and beyond, so when we were not able to do anything last year it was disappointing. This will be the first time for sophomores to celebrate Gilbert’s Birthday.”
This past Monday April 26, SABERs gave away free glazed donuts and stickers in honor of Gilbert. On Wednesday, the organization put on a “Wild Goose Hunt” in the Moody Center lobby with hidden eggs filled with prizes. Prizes included gift cards, socks, candy, an Echo Dot, a Polaroid Printer and more.
“The Wild Goose Hunt was such a blast to plan and be a part of,” said Anna Ganus, sophomore SABERs member and art major from Weatherford. “This goose probably has no idea what is happening but he has been celebrated all week. Happy birthday Gilbert.”
Congratulations to Tyler Stevens and Keziah Chacko for finding the golden eggs with the Echo Dots and Polaroid Printers and congratulations to all the other winners.
Tomorrow, Friday April 30, SABERs will hold the final event for Gilbert’s birthday. Come celebrate with the HSU community on Anderson Lawn from 5-7 p.m. with live music, free food trucks, inflatables and all sorts of family fun. See more info on HSU SABERs Instagram page.
