Finals Week by: Delani Bauer

As the semester rapidly comes to a close, Hardin-Simmons University’s finals week is scheduled for Dec. 9-12.

You can find this semester’s final exam schedule in several places.  The schedule may be located in your class syllabus or be provided closer to final exams by your professor.

The Academic Center for Enrichment (ACE) is a helpful tool provided free to all HSU students who may need their services prior to final exams. The ACE Center is located on the first floor of the Richardson Library.  It is open Monday through Thursday and Sunday.

The ACE provides students with peer academic tutors to help in each course.  Each tutor has taken the given course and specializes in that particular subject area.

ACE tutor, Phillip Hugh, English major from Garland, said, “I think just generally one of the neat parts of the ACE is that it’s the students bringing the work to us. They’re able to pick out the specific things or areas or concepts or whatever that they’re having trouble with so that we can really narrow in on how exactly to help them overcome the obstacles that they specifically are facing.”

Attending tutoring sessions at the ACE Center is a great way to prepare for finals.  You can find the ACE Fall Schedule and many helpful study tips in HSU Central.  Select the COURSE tab and select ACE.

Tips for Finals

  1. Destress:

Finals can be a stressful time for many students.  It is important to not get overwhelmed by exams and take time for yourself.  Make sure to take study breaks so that you do not mentally fatigue your mind.  You can take breaks by going for a walk, spending time with friends or participating in other activities you enjoy.

  1. Pace Yourself:

Finals are often cumulative and will cover the entire semester's worth of information.  It is vital to learn all needed information, but you do not want to cram directly before the test.  Jayden Harrell, sophomore biology major from Graham, describes her study strategy in saying, “What I do is sit down in a coffee shop with a little sweet treat to motivate me. Then I force myself to know so much of what I'm trying to study before I can take a drink.”

  1. Be Confident:

Your professors have prepared you well to excel on your final exams.  This is your chance to prove what you have learned throughout the semester.  Take your time, do not overthink and you will excel during finals week..
