Dr. Steve Stogsdill, professor of communication and head of the department of communication, has been teaching strategic communications at Hardin-Simmons University for almost 14 years. He is often found sending “verses of the week” to his students, encouraging them while also following our educational mission here at HSU: “An Education Enlightened by Faith.”
Although Dr. Stogsdill is passionate about teaching his students, this is not what he originally planned to do. In fact, he began his education at Hannibal-LaGrange University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Bible. From there, he received two master degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. One was in religious education and the other in communication. He received a doctorate of organizational communication from Texas A&M University in 2009.
Dr. Stogsdill claims that it was actually his wife that brought him to HSU. She grew up in Abilene and graduated from here. After college, she had a desire to move closer to her family, and “God opened the door to make it possible,” Stogsdill said. Once moved back to Abilene, he was able to begin teaching what he loves at Hardin-Simmons.
Dr. Stogsdill says that his students bring him his greatest enjoyment from serving at HSU. “My first teaching position was at my Alma Mater, HLGU, which is a small Baptist college like HSU,” Dr. Stogsdill said. “I was glad to be able to teach what I love at a faith-based institution.” And that is exactly what he does. Dr. Stogsdill is able to teach his students in a professional manner while also sharing God’s love by the way he helps, teaches and loves others.
