Jessica Eastham is a senior member of the Hardin-Simmons University track team, excelling in both indoor and outdoor competitions. Eastham is also an exercise science major with a minor in honors. Her plans after receiving her undergraduate degree is to attend physical therapy school at The University of Incarnate World in San Antonio.
Eastham has been running track since seventh grade. She is currently completing a decade of running track. Eastham shared how her parents noticed her talent from an early age. “My parents like to say I ran before I could walk,” Eastham said.
Eastham runs the 60-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter and 4x400 relay for the HSU indoor track team. For outdoor track season, Eastham runs the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay.
Indoor track is new to Hardin-Simmons University, however Eastham hit the ground running, figuratively and literally. Eastham has already broken the 60-meter record, 200-meter record and the 400-meter record.
Eastham is very humble about her successes this year. “Breaking the records just reinforces that I’m doing everything I need to do to get better,” Eastham said.
Eastham shared why she has such a passion for track. “I love track because it gives me the opportunity to discover what I’m capable of. There are so many mental and physical challenges that I must confront on a daily basis to achieve something that others think is so simple. Running fast is an art that requires practice to be mastered,” Eastham said.
Even though she has had success up to this point, Eastham is not satisfied and does not plan to slow down during the outdoor season. She has lofty goals going forward. “My biggest goal this season is to make it to outdoor nationals in a relay and in an individual event,” Eastham said.
