Choir to Perform Annual Hymn Sing by: Hope Menken

It is finally spring, which means finals, cramming, graduation plans, senior recitals, showcases and the annual Hymn Sing is at hand

This is a free and public event for individuals to come together in fellowship with other groups and individuals to praise the Lord through well-known and loved hymns. It will also be the final event of the class of 1975’s Golden Reunion, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of their graduation. This year, Hymn Sing will be held on Tuesday. April 8 at 2 in Logsdon Chapel.

Hymn Sing is an interactive musical experience where the audience is allowed and encouraged to sing. It also includes performances by several groups, including the choirs, the Worship Ensemble and the Concert Band. Concert Choir and Chorale will sing How Firm a Foundation arranged by Dale Wood and accompanied by Abigail Payne.

“The audience has the opportunity to sing and hear some of our traditional hymns of faith and some newer settings of great hymn texts.” Dr. Dee Romines, associate professor of music education and director of Choral and the Worship Ensemble, said.

Hymn Sing will also feature the Worship Ensemble singing Yet Not I But Through Christ in My by City of Light.  “I am excited to hear some of the older hymns that we don’t hear as much anymore,” Rebekah Higgins, senior Worship Leadership major from Canyon said. “Hymn Sing also overlaps with the Golden Reunion, which provides a great opportunity to show the alumni what we have been doing. It shows that we are still here and thriving.”

The Concert Band, directed by Jay Lester, assistant professor of trumpet and music education, director of bands, will be performing A Prelude Festival (based on Come Thou Long Expected Jesus) and SLANE (based on Be Thou My Vision.) “The HSU Hymn Sing is the one event that focuses on our great tradition of singing quality hymns.  In addition, our various ensembles offer the worshipper several styles of music through different mediums.” said Lester. “The HSU Concert Band is proud to participate in the worship service and looks forward to it annually.”
