Celebrate Black History Month with Proven by: Lauren Sincerney

Hardin-Simmons University has a vast variety of different clubs and organizations. Just one of the many examples of amazing groups on campus is HSU Proven, the Black Student Union. The organization focuses on having a safe, yet fun, environment that engages all students.

This month, Proven is celebrating black history month. They have many events planned throughout the month. The first was on Feb.1, with a Family Feud night. It was an incredible event with lots of fun.

If you happened to miss the first event, do not worry, there are many more great opportunities for the remainder of the month. The next event is called Fitted Friday. It will take place on Feb. 9 and 23. Fitted Friday is when students and faculty are encouraged to wear their best outfits to class and around campus for the day. Then one of the Proven officers will take a picture of them and post it to the HSU Proven instagram. The instagram followers will then vote on their favorite outfit and the winners will each receive a $10 Chick-fil-A gift card.

Another  planned event will be the Hot Chocolate and a Movie night on Feb. 16. There will be a hot chocolate bar with whipped cream, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows and more. Proven  will also be screening an inspiring black movie that sheds a positive light on black Americans and their many contributions to our country. Members will post a poll on instagram to determine the exact movie. There will also be plenty of snacks to go along.

The last event that Proven will be hosting is the Black is Everything Dinner. It will be held on Feb. 29. It is an elegant dinner party that everyone is welcome to attend.. The dress code is fancy wear and the color scheme will consist of red, black, gold and purple. The food will be catered by SoulFood Shack Grab & Go. During the event, the officers will all be introducing themselves and sharing a story about black figures that inspire them the most. It should be an amazing event.

If you are interested in any of these events, check them out. All HSU students are invited to the events, no matter the race, gender, sexuality or beliefs. “We want everyone to feel welcomed and comfortable to be at our events and even join the club,” said Sierra Reeder, a sophomore communication science and disorders major from Forest Hill. “We enjoy seeing new faces and getting to know people.” If you would like to join or go to the events then talk to a member or follow the Proven instagram: @HSUProven.
