All About Thanksgiving by: Delani Bauer

Events

Hardin-Simmons University’s Thanksgiving Break is Nov. 27-29.  Thanksgiving Day is Nov. 28, and there will be a lot of on-campus activities surrounding this holiday.

On Nov. 25, HSU will host its 15th Annual Turkey 5K. The event’s purpose is to raise money for the children and families of Ortiz Elementary in order to bring Thanksgiving to their homes. The event is set to begin at 4 in the Simmons Street Parking Lot-Outdoor Space and will circle around the HSU campus.  President Eric Bruntmeyer and many faculty members will be running alongside HSU students.

The HSU community came together to collect food for Ortiz Elementary’s Thanksgiving Food Drive. For every bag filled, participating students received one chapel credit.

During Thanksgiving Break, the HSU Cowboy Football Team will be playing their first playoff game of the season. The game will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, with time and location pending.

Traditions

Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for the blessings present in your life.  Each student at HSU shares their own Thanksgiving traditions.

“My favorite Thanksgiving Day tradition is the excitement of getting ready for Christmas,” said Abygale Morris, sophomore biology major from Abilene.

Bonnie VanDer Schaaf, sophomore art major from Quitman said she loves “getting to go home and eat my grandparent’s fluffy rolls.  I could eat buckets of those things.”

Fun Facts

In 2021, the average American was found to have consumed 15 pounds of turkey throughout the year.  Surveys found that on average one pound of the 15 pounds was consumed on Thanksgiving day alone. In contrast to the Thanksgiving feast, Thanksgiving is the most popular day for racing in the United States.  This is due to the large amounts of turkey-themed races hosted on this day.
