Hardin-Simmons University student advising — when students meet with their advisors to plan their classes for the following semester — will open on Oct. 1 for all students.
In order to meet with an advisor, an appointment must be made. Students can email their advisors to schedule a meeting time. Students who don’t know who their advisor is can go to HSU Self Service to find out. First go to Academics, then to Student Planning, then click Plan and Schedule, under the advising tab it will list who the advisor is and how to contact them. Upperclassmen are usually given priority when scheduling meetings.
Before meeting with their advisor, students are advised to have reviewed the following year’s schedule and course catalog and have a good idea of what classes they need and plan them out. To see what classes are required, students can go to My Progress in HSU Self Service to see what classes are needed for their major. To add a class to your schedule, students can either add them straight from My Progress or go to Plan and Schedule to look up classes and add them there. Students must also select a section of the class they are planning on taking before registering for it. This is not a final decision. Students can change the classes they have planned and their advisors will help them to sort through and see if the classes are correct or if any need to be added or removed. Students may take up to 17 credit hours before needing special permission from the registrar's office and their advisor. Additional hours also come with an additional cost.
The next step is to register for the classes to secure the spot. Registration for the spring and May term will open on Nov. 5 for graduates and Seniors with 90 or more completed credit hours. Registration for Juniors (60+), Sophomores (30+) and Freshman will open on Nov. 7. The last day to register online will be the second day of the spring term and the first day of the May Term.
Students are encouraged to register for classes as soon as possible, because classes can fill up quickly.
